The court has given its verdict in the Anna University sexual harassment case. The ruling, pronounced by Judge M Rajalakshmi, follows Gnanasekaran’s conviction on May 28 under 11 charges, including rape and IT Act violations. The case, which triggered protests across Tamil Nadu and heated discussions on X, marks a significant step toward justice and campus safety.

A Horrific Crime

The assault occurred on Anna University’s College of Engineering campus in Guindy, Chennai, when Gnanasekaran, a 38-year-old biryani vendor, lured the 19-year-old student to an isolated area near the hostel. He raped her, recorded the act, and threatened to leak the video online, as per police reports. The survivor’s complaint, filed on December 24, led to Gnanasekaran’s swift arrest. The case, reported by the Times of India, sparked outrage on X, with users demanding severe punishment and safer campuses, one posting, “Justice must prevail for her courage!”

Swift Legal Action

The trial, conducted in a fast-track court, saw the Tamil Nadu Police submit a 500-page chargesheet within days, detailing Gnanasekaran’s crimes under BNS Section 64(2) for rape and IT Act sections for recording the assault. Convicted on 11 counts, he faced a rigorous life term, meaning no parole for 30 years, and a Rs 90,000 fine, with Rs 80,000 allocated for the survivor’s compensation. X users praised the court’s efficiency, with one noting, “Fast justice restores faith.” The survivor’s testimony, supported by forensic evidence, was pivotal.

Public Outrage and Protests

The case ignited statewide protests, with students and activists rallying outside Anna University, demanding better security. The incident exposed vulnerabilities like poor lighting and lax campus surveillance, prompting the university to install 1,000 CCTV cameras and hire additional guards. Posts on X, like “Campuses must be safe havens,” fueled calls for systemic changes, with hashtags like #JusticeForAnna trending. The survivor’s family received counseling, reflecting community support.

A Step Toward Justice

The verdict has been hailed as a victory for survivors of sexual violence, reinforcing strict penalties for such crimes. The fine will aid the survivor’s recovery, while the life sentence sends a strong message. However, X discussions emphasize ongoing needs for campus reforms, including 24/7 security and awareness programs.
